• A grain you can feel change: lactic acid, at 4.5% and the most present active in the lotion, stays on the surface and lifts the dead cells that make skin rough. This is the dose that does the work across the cheeks.
• A second pass on the plug: white willow bark and betaine salicylate sit further down the list and push in the same direction as the salicylic acid, on the nose and the sides of the nose.
• Nightly exfoliation the skin can actually take: centella, panthenol and allantoin calm while hyaluronic acid holds water. That pairing is why this is an everyday pad and not a weekend scrub.

Denatured alcohol comes fifth on the list. It gives the cool hit and the fast dry that oily skin likes, and it is also what skin that flushes easily will feel. Four citrus oils, rosemary, eucalyptus and lavender give the pad its sharp green scent.

Step 4 · Toner

in the evening, on clean skin, in place of your toner rather than on top of it.

• Take one pad and start with the embossed side.
• Sweep the nose, the sides of the nose, the chin and the forehead, without pressing.
• Turn to the smooth side and press the remaining lotion into the cheeks and neck.
• Give it a minute, then carry on with your serum.
