It is late, you are at the mirror, and the mascara has survived two cotton pads. The sunscreen is the worse of the two: it leaves a film that water alone will not lift, and left alone it sits on the skin all night. This balm exists for those two stubborn minutes at the end of a day.

A cold paste in a 100 ml pot, lifted out with the spatula and worked onto a face that is completely dry. Finger heat is all it takes to turn it liquid.

• Stubborn makeup loosened instead of scrubbed off: long-wear foundation, waterproof mascara and sunscreen filters all dissolve into the balm under the fingers. Nothing has to be rubbed at, which is what spares the lash line and the thin skin beside it.
• The pore emptied before the night: a day of sebum and the fine city dust stuck to it leave with the balm. The face reads clear again instead of carrying the day to bed.
• Softness kept through the rinse: cica powder travels in the paste. The cleanse ends without the tight, squeaky finish that sends oily skin straight back to making more oil.
• The surface smoothed over the weeks: the small dry flakes that flatten a tone come away a few at a time, evening after evening.

A pot goes where a glass bottle does not. It will not leak in a wash bag, and you take what you need with the spatula rather than pouring blind.

Step 1 · Oil cleanser

dry hands, dry face. That is the only condition that matters.

• Scoop a dose the size of an almond with the spatula and soften it between the fingers.
• Work it over the face in slow circles for a minute, lids included if you are wearing mascara.
• Add a trickle of warm water and carry on until the balm goes pale and loose.
• Rinse the lot off, and put a foaming cleanser behind it: that second pass is the other half of the double cleanse.

One scoop an evening puts a 100 ml pot at roughly ten weeks of made-up days.
